About Peace Through Violence

The lands of Azeroth have been rent, torn asunder.

A great evil from the past -long sleeping, but always plotting- has returned, his hatred and vengeance now fueled by a burning elemental fury, intent on devastating the world. Kingdoms lie in ruins, their peoples in disarray. For some, it is a time of heroism, where nobility can show its strength. For others, the iron-clad hand of brutality and tyranny will rule the day, where oppression and rage display their primacy. It is a world in ruins, a world split and bleeding. It is a world in need to heroes, those willing to sacrifice all to mend this broken world.

Welcome to Peace Through Violence!

Peace Through Violence is a business casual guild focused on small group raiding and event planning, placing a heavy emphasis on current and future 5- and 10- man content. Our goal is to provide our members with consistent and reliable opportunities to experience all quests, instance and 10 man content provided by the upcoming Cataclysm expansion.

We are a "hardcore" ten-man raiding guild, in that we seek to provide fun and enjoyment for our members, but also expect quality and dedication as well. Our immediate goal is to field two fully functional 10 man raiding groups, conquering at least two ten-man raids per week. We seek to provide off-night Heroic runs, as many as our membership can muster in preparation for the coming Cataclysm and to take back our world from the forces of Neltharion...

Now known as Deathwing the Destroyer.

As such, our primary goal is developing a number of consistent groups who learn to work together in 10 man raids, instances, on quests and in Arena matches. Our experience has been that the most rewarding and enjoyable groups are those that routinely play together. Instances are easier with less downtime and drama. Arena groups are more successful. Raids progress further and upgrades are easier to attain.

Our plan is simple: cultivate a discrete core guild roster of players who play regularly. Establish a solid calendar of events ranging from 10-man raiding to Heroic instances and coordinated quest completion and faction-building. Our focus is on honing how we play together. We will display our quality as a guild by the excellence we cultivate in our ranks. If you are on our site now, then we know we've been successful.

Guild Goals

We have four core steps in our plan to progress:

1. Organized Questing / Factioning. Most guilds shy away from any sort of organized questing on an event level. Most leave it to the individual. It has been our experience that this policy can be unduly frustrating. Getting Pick-Up-Groups (PUGs) for a quest is nearly impossible. Unofficial in-guild groups are equally difficult since questing often conflicts with other organized events. Thus, many find a great number of quests languishing in their quest log, often never finished.

We see this as a critical error. WotLK introduces some of the best quest rewards in the game. These can often be critical upgrades that often surpass non-Heroic (and sometimes even Heroic) rewards. Furthermore, these quests often hold the key for less tangible advancement opportunities, be it great access to factioned gear to Heroic keys to opening new areas. Quests are also often a primary source of funds in game.

Furthermore, in Wrath of the Lich King the guild will be striving to level our existing mains as well as leveling any new characters we may create. Pushing through the 70-80 leveling period will require access to guildmates who are also in this same range, so making this an important part of our goals is essential to reaching the Lich king endgame raiding content.

Many of us play this game for enjoyment and questing is the bread-and-butter of our formative time in game. We will not force our members to fend for themselves trying to complete group quests. Not only is questing and building faction easier when done as a guild, but it also helps build better play skills. Finally, it is the key to getting all of our members into Heroic instances, which is one of our primary short-term goals.

2. Heroic Instances. Heroics offer excellent rewards for only a marginally higher amount of effort and skill and minimal investment of time. They are essential to progressing through the game, both in terms of 'gearing up' as well as attaining necessary 'keys'or 'flags' for further, more advanced content.

Many guilds rarely focus on Heroics or often exclude newer members. To foster participation and to illustrate our commitment to seeing all of our members running these Heroics, we've dedicated ourselves to helping each other through the preliminary steps (see Organized Questing) and will be scheduling events that will focus our attention on specific zones for instance runs.

An unfortunate facet of Heroics is that certain instances hold less allure for certain classes. As such, some instances are very hard to find participants for simply because people do not want ánything from them. As a guild, we eschew this outlook. We can only be successful if everyone is given the tools to succeed. While this level of focus might seem somewhat regimented, it will ultimately insure that everyone gets the gear they need to make our 10 man runs as successful as possible.

3. Arena Teams. PvP is rarely ever afforded official sponsorship in guilds. On the whole, we will allow it to remain completely optional for our members. However, Arena games hold an exceptional level of reward for a minimal amount of investment. As such, we will be sponsoring 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5 teams in the guild. The gear rewards from Arenas are outstanding and a boon to more conventional guild progression. Furthermore, the teamwork developed in these groups can develop small-team tactics that are essential for class and raid development.

4. 10 Man Raiding. This is our ultimate goal at this time. We are looking for people who share this goal and are willing to work toward it, within the confines of a normal, adult lifestyle. As such, we are looking to tackle a progressive 10-man raid program in WotLK, as well as any new challenges as they are introduced into the game. Contrary to previous experiences in guilds, we will strive to include everyone in these raids. We will not foster elite raiding groups. We believe that everyone is entitled to this content if they are willing to work together towards mastering it. However, dedication and perserverance is rewarded and those that stand out as the best of us will be rewarded commensurately.

At this point, we do not plan to raid 25 man dungeons. That requires a raid and play regimen that we are not prepared to ask nor expect of our guild members at this time. They are not something we have planned in the immediate future. We want to be as clear on this as possible, both to avoid unfortunate misunderstandings and to clarify as much as possible our end goals. We also see this as important because we want our goals to be easily attainable and achievable.

We see these steps as crucial to our success and the means by which we will excel and exemplify to the WoW community the quality of our membership and the excellence of our guild. Everyone is a crucial part of that success. No one will be overlooked or excluded. A guild is only as strong as the sum of it's parts and we seek to make that as great as possible.

Loot Policy

Peace Through Violence uses a modified EP/GP or Effort Point/Gear Point DKP system to determine priority for loot drops. EP/GP is a relational DKP system that balances the effort of an individual in relation to the gear they have been awarded. Effort Points (EP) quantify the effort each member put towards the (common) guild goals and Gear Points (GP) quantify what each member got back in return. Loot priority -or Priority (PR)- is computed as the quotient of the two; A member's PR is equal to EP divided by GP. Therefore, the more effort you've put into the guild's goals in relation to the rewards (gear) you've received, the higher your PR, or priority, in the loot system.

For more information about our loot system and policies, please speak with an officer (or members can view our forum thread about EP/GP).

Guild Charter

Peace Through Violence is a semi-casual guild for mature players, encompassing all playstyles and age ranges. It was founded by a core group of friends who share a number of similar traits and desires:

We are all adults, ages 18-40+. We have normal lives, work schedules, families and friends. As such, World of Warcraft is a luxury for us, not an occupation. We play accordingly. Be that as it may, we seek a rewarding, enjoyable experience from WoW and the time and monetary investment we make into it. We want to join our friends in-game and see new content, explore things and work together towards a common goal. Our goals include Heroic instances, limited PvP, and 10-man instances for now. More than anything else, we want to have fun and succeed.

To accomplish that we foster a mature, respectful environment for our members. Respect is a privledge, not a right. However, it is expected that all members will treat each other with respect. No one is to be ignored or excluded. We will not tolerate adolescent or rude behavior within our ranks or towards those outside our guild. People invited to join our groups and raids are our emissaries with other guilds and will bear testimony to the quality of our membership. They are ultimately the tool by which we'll grow and prosper as a guild.

Guild Membership
As a 'mature', adult guild, all members but be at least 18 years or older to be accepted into the guild. Players under the age of 18 must be recommended by one of our officers or more tenured members or must be the child of a member to be considered. We do not wish to discriminate against younger players, but we want the freedom to speak and act like adults and expect all of our members to behave in an adult manner, an expectation unfair to adolescents.

We accept all characters, level 60 and up, with the understanding that the official focus of our guild is content-oriented towards level 70 and higher characters. However, we will always strive to provide opportunities for our lower level characters and as often as possible participate with them in instances and questing.

It goes without saying that vulgar and inappropriate character names will not be tolerated within Peace Through Violence.

All full members may only have a single 'main' character that raids in the guild. This is entirely for purposes of determining raid and loot eligibility. You are always welcome to bring an alt to any event, with the clear understanding that 'mains' will always take precendence when determing raid slots and any loot consideration our loot system does not cover. Exceptions to this rule include an alternate character that fills a specific, in-demand, class or role in an event, like a Healer or Tank. This exception will only occur at the behest or permission of the guild leadership or raid leader that night. For more information about PtV's loot policy, see above.

All members may have as many alts as they want in the guild. We will also allow members to keep lower level alts in their old guilds, especially where there is family and friends. We honor this loyalty and wish you to maintain your filial ties to the greatest extent possible. However, you may not keep an alternate character who is actively involve in raiding with another guild, insofar as it would conflict with our raid schedule. You can only be a good raider in a single guild. Anything more would eventually cause conflict. If you are a member of Peace Through Violence, your loyalty and dedication rests with us.

Code of Conduct
Violations of our rules of courtesy will be met swiftly and fairly, but with finality. A single violation will merit a warning. Two violations will be grounds for deguilding, with appeal. Three violations will be permanent deguilding and censure. Behaviors that will not be accepted include: racism, sexism, ageism, or other examples of overt intolerance; excessive usage of expletives; poor gameplay, such as ninja-looting, ninja-logging, or loot-mongering; and overtly sexual behavior - this is a PvE server, not a ERP server.

While we encourage our members to have strong opinions and attitudes, we also require that they temper those opinions with respect. For every word you say, you should listen to ten of a differing opinion. We fully expect debates to occur about a number of in-game issues, but we will only allow the most civil of debates to rage concerning real-life events, religion, or politics. This is a game, not a soapbox for your own social opinions.

[ADDENDUM: Please read the following thread for an addition and expansion of our Code of Conduct policy]

Guild Leadership
PtV's leadership is loosely based upon that of the Roman Legion for both flavor and simplicity. The ranks and their equivalencies are as follows:

Legatus Legio. The guild leader, responsible for any final decisions and the ultimate direction of Peace Through Violence.

Praefectus. The Co-GL, responsbile for leading in the absence of the Legatus.

Tribuni Legio. The raid officer(s), responsbile for creating strategies, forming and leading raids and executing guild policy as it pertains to raiding. Executive officer within raids.

Tribunus. The guild officers, advisors for the guild leaders and themselves leaders within the guild, in charge of recruitment and assisting guild members.

Primus Legio. The raiding corps. Through executing of quality raiding and gameplay, elevated to preferred raiding status. Although discussed more in-depth elsewhere, this rank is honorary and contingent upon continued excellence and dedication.

Centurion. The rank-and-file member. Once elevated from a recruit, this is the standard guild rank.

Militie Tirone. Raw recruits, placed on evaluation status to determine compatibility with the guild and it's members.

Decisions in the guild will be made by the co-guild leaders, advised by our raid officers and officers.

It is your perogative to question any decisions within the boundaries of courtesy and civility. Any decision made by the leadership that a substantial amount of the membership disagrees with will be put to a general vote of the guild for it to be changed or rescinded. At that point, the will of the guild has spoken and no matter the outcome, all will abide by it. However, if you feel you have consistently become at odds with the will of the leadership and/or guild, then we encourage you to re-evaluate your place within Peace Through Violence.

In-Game Participation
Participation in events is largely optional, although your membership in Peace Through Violence will be a tacit agreement to further the goals of our guild: if you are joining us, then you are effectively saying you agree with and are dedicated to the goals we set forth. As such, your regular participation will be necessary to further those goals. We expect all members to participate in as many events -be they heroics, quests, PvP or raids- as possible and members who seem to never participate will find their membership under review. We will leave this a subjective decision at this point, but reserve the right to place a more quantitative value on it at a later date.

Website Participation
The website is where you can see our goals, sign up for raids, find tradeskill help, share experiences, and enhance both your gameplay and you social enjoyment of the game. Most importantly, it is where the leadership can speak directly to the guild, regardless of schedules and of online presence. In other words, no other means of distributing information -not guildchat nor GMOTD- can reach our members as definitively and as fully as our website can. We can reach you all, even if you are not online at that moment. It cannot be emphasized strongly enough why this makes the website so important and so essential to the progression and success of Peace Through Violence. All members of Peace Through Violence must create an account on our website. Failing to have an active website account will result in expulsion from the guild. All new members are required to create a website account before being elevated to the rank of Centurion.

State of the Guild posts are mandatory to read and respond to. The SoG is an important part of communicating the progress and the plans of the guild. It is how the leadership evaluates the performance of the guild and its members and explains the goals and policies. The sheer scope of what is discussed in a single SoG would be impossible to disseminate by any other means without being cumbersome and redundant. These posts are exactly what they say: the "state" our guild is in. Being an attentive, determined guild member necessitates that you be aware of what is happening in our guild and what lies in the future.

Signups for raids are mandatory. The official means of signing up for a raid is on our website, not using the in-game Calendar tool. Sign-ups are not limited to only ten people. While it's true we generally try to allot slots on a "First Signup, First Slotted" basis, we will always be required to make considerations for class and role needs, as well as for history of participation. In addition, being signed up earns EP and guarantees you a spot in case one of the slotted raiders cannot attend or is not on-site within fifteen minutes past the scheduled raid start time. Even if you are waitlisted for a raid, we will note your effort and that will work in your favor in subsequent raids.

The Raid Leaders need to know if we will have the requisite amount of people available for a given raid well before time so they can make plans to include "blended" raiders if we fall short. Waiting until the last moment to determine if a raid is viable is unfair to those raiders who do signup and to the raid leaders themselves. Even if you are unsure you can be there on-time, sign-up and notate that you may be late. At least that way we have an accurate gauge of interest and attendance.

Since web participation is essential to successful raiding, there is an incentive to participation. PtV has a number of forum ranks based on post counts; they are as follows: Scribe (25), Inscriptor (50), Legate (100), Prelate (250), Consul (500), and Oracle (1000). Members who maintain at least a 30% raid participation will recieve a bonus equal to their post count milestone (the number in parenthesis) at the first of every month. Reading and posting are not difficult nor unduly time consuming. It can be done at almost any time of day. Therefore, there's no compelling reasons anyone should not be able to utilize our website to it's fullest.

Disclaimer
By being a member of Peace Through Violence, you are agreeing to the tenets set forth in this charter and are dedicated to furthering the goals and methods set forth in the above prospectus and by the decisions of the leadership. Violation of these rules can result in disciplinary actions up to and including expulsion from Peace Through Violence for all characters on a player's account.
