re: Raiding 101

0
Raiding can be one of the most challenging activities you can do in WoW and therefore requires a higher level of attention, dedication and patience than soloing or even Heroics. Since, PtV's primary focus is on the act of raiding and progressing through Wrath content, all of these same things contribute to the success or failure of our raids and ultimately the guild. And the success of the raid is directly a result of the success of our members. It is therefore important that everyone understands what is expected of them before and during a raid.

So, consider this a primer, a Raiding 101 class for PtV.

Before we Raid
Preparation is at the heart of successful raiding. Being prepared requires a number of things and each is equally important to your overall success as a member of our raiding membership as well as in the capacity of being a good guild member. Before the day of the raid even occurs, you must do the following:

1. Sign-up for the raid.
Sounds somewhat obvious, but many people fail to do this. Making sure to sign up for raids ensures that our leadership has a good idea of viability and group composition for a raid. It also affects your ability to even participate in a given raid: no sign-up? Then you are very unlikely to get a raid spot. After you sign-up, make sure to check the raid sign-ups regularly; some classes are quickly locked in, some aren't. This is a good wya to see beforehand if you're assigned a slot or not.

2. Read the strategies.
Our raid leaders work very hard to research each boss that we plan to fight. They post that information online so that our members can read over proven strategies for boss fights and prepare themselves for what must be done for a successful raid. Reading and knowing these strategies beforehand means that you have more time to ask questions before the raid and we spend less time on the night of the raid explaining things and can spend more time getting to bosses, killing them, seeing new things and getting good loot.

3. Know your class, know your role.
Again this might sound somewhat obvious and even perhaps a bit insulting, but it's dismaying how a misused class talent or a flawed understanding of how your class works in a raid can quickly and completely devastate a raid. In raids, we must all play our classes as well as we possibly can. This game is supposed to be fun, but it's a game predicated on the pursuit of excellence. Very few "games" exist whose purpose is not winning or getting better. WoW is no different; learn how to play your class to the best of your ability. Learn what talents and abilities work in a raid and what don't. Learn what gear best suits your class and complements your talent build. Furthermore, read the aforementioned strategies and learn what your character's role is in the raid. We're not looking for number-crunching, ElitistJerks.com perfection; we're just looking for good players playing their classes well.

4. Install our Add-on Pack & Vent
There are four add-ons or applications that PtV requires all of its raiding members to use: Omen, Deadly Boss Mods, Ventrillo and our loot-mod, LM_Core. None of these are optional. Omen tracks threat and integrates with other people's Omen, so it's essential for the raid to maintain proper aggro levels. DBM notifies the raid about specific boss attacks and creates announcements, so it's needed to tell each of us what is about to occur or is occurring with a boss. Vent is our voice chat system and is REQUIRED for the raid leaders to quickly, accurately and effectively communicate strategies and commands on-the-fly. Finally, LM_Core is our in-game EPGP loot tool. It quickly and easily notifies people of items, handles bids and facilitates the award process for those items. Simply put, if you do not have this add-on, you will not see loot drops, cannot bid and therefore will not win any loot. Obviously, you must have all of these addons enabled at the time of the raid. Our loot package can be downloaded by clicking here.

5. You are a PtV Raider.
This means that you only do 10-man content with us, not with other guilds. If you raid with another guild, you're essentially depriving your guild of the ability to field you on a raid; that could potentially ruin a raid, if you're a needed class. The only time you can raid 10 man content is with express permission of our raid leaders. Of course, since our guild is not a 25-man raiding guild, you are free to raid in 25 man PuGs, unless it conflicts with our own raid schedule. Again, you are a PtV raider.

Raid Day
The day of the raid has come and now is the time to prepare for the raid. There's a short list of things that you should consider when it's the day of the raid:

1. Verify Your Schedule
If you are accepted for the raid, make sure that your schedule doesn't conflict. If it does, notify a raid leader or an officer as soon as you possibly can. This is very important as it gives the RLs time to find a replacement, get them briefed and on-site in time. Also let an officer or the raid leader know if you're expecting to be late. Make sure that you do not start a set of dailies or an instance run that might conflict with the raid. Make no mistake: if you are on an instance run or doing dailies and the raid is about to begin, we will not wait for you. We will find a replacement and leave you behind, as well as waitlist you on the next couple of raids. if you're signed up to raid, then that's your top priority. And perhaps as importantly, check the raid sign-ups before the raid. Not everyone will get to go and knowing that you're wait-listed can save you time, although if you plan on being unavailable, please remove your sign-up.

2. Provision your character.
You cannot raid with a half-stack of reagents and 50% durability on your gear. We shouldn't be required to drop Repair Bots more than once (and even then on long, hard runs) or take restocking breaks because people failed to take care of these things prior to a raid. Repair your gear, restock your reagents/poisons and come to the raid with heal/mana potions and buff scrolls and elixirs.

3. Be on time.
When one person is fifteen minutes late, nine people have wasted one-hundred and thirty five minutes of their collective lives. If you're going to be late, let an officer know as soon as you can. If it's going to be a very tardy appearance, we'll have to consider a replacement, but at least you've not unduly delayed us. Really, barring real life dilemmas, there's no plausible or excusable reason to be late to a raid. Raid times are posted and do not change. This means be at the summoning stone 15 minutes before the raid; do not wait for a summons. Be there, fifteen minutes early, every time.

During the Raid
It's raid time; time to bring out the best in everyone, to work as a team, to perform your best. The goal of the night is an enjoyable time, seeing new things, the thrill of downing new bosses and ultimately, the possibility of good, shiny purples. However, there are some things everyone must abide by for that to happen consistently:

1. Ears open, mouths shut.
Ten people are in this zone to raid, not to openly debate politics, share recipes or chit-chat about their favorite TV shows. Cross-chatter on Vent serves only to cause racket and delay the raid leaders from getting important information out to the guild. Like the old childhood maxim goes: speak only when spoken to. Only the raid leaders and the people they are speaking to should ever be speaking in Vent. Everyone else should be listening. When asked a question, answer simply; do not launch into a five minute explanation of something or recounting of past attempts unless that is what was requested.

2. Leave your toys in the bank.
Yes: the [Clockwork Rocket Bot] is cool, your new skunk pet is very impressive and who doesn't love becoming a dancing, flaming Dranei. However, this is raid time, not play time. Your neat little trinkets are only neat when they don't disrupt the raid. Do not bring anything that is tranformative or can manipulate another character: no [Hallowed Wand - Wisp] or [Direbrew's Remote] . They have no place in a raid and serve only to disrupt our pace.

3. Do only what is asked of your character.
All of our characters have a multitude of abilities and talents. Often, many of these are not called for in a raid. While this falls back into the category of Knowing Your Class, it begs to be mentioned again. In raids, you are required to use a very discrete selection of your abilities. These abilities form the core of your tanking/healing/damage-dealing repertoire. Things that fall outside of this list are often -at best- useless or -at worst- destructive and disruptive to a raid. Shadow Dance and Killing Spree are very cool abilities, but have no place in a raid. Nor does Army of the Dead. In general, any ability that taunts, draws excessive aggro or affects a number of mobs simultaneously -even if you use them in your soloing or grouping runs- are not appropriate for raiding. If we want you to summon a legion of the damned or dance your fool rogue around the place, we'll ask you to do so. Otherwise, do only what is asked to the best of your ability.

4. No Phantom AFKs.
If you need to use the restroom, get a drink, walk the dogs, change diapers, handle spousal aggro.. ANYTHING that takes you from your computer, tell an officer. We should only be going AFK when a Raid Leader calls for an AFK, but if something arises, don't just leave your PC without a word because you'll be /raidkicked without a word.

5. PvE not PvP.
At no time -during any part of the raid, neither beginning nor middle- should you EVER participate in PvP activities. No matter how fun ganking some Aliance player might be, you're here to kill raid bosses, not gnomes and night elves. If you flag yourself, you're potentially delaying the raid party even further since retribution for your gankfest might be forthcoming from that Alliance player's pals. Your focus for the night is raiding, not PvPing.

Closing Thoughts
Peace Through Violence supports a two to three day raid schedule, each raid consisting of a four hour time slot. That means each week -on average- we raid for twelve hours or 720 minutes. That means if we waste thirty minutes each raid night getting people to the zone, repaired, restocked and properly updated, then another fifteen minutes on each boss (and let's say nine bosses per week) explaining strategies that people didn't study beforehand and then another thirty minutes each night trying to manage excessive Vent chatter or handle some inadvertent prank, we've wasted a grand total of 315 minutes. That's nearly half our raid time. And before you scoff, we easily squandered that much time in the past. Being prepared, paying attention and performing well are not hard to accomplish and yield far greater results. We're not here to spoil anyone's fun, but we are here to raid successfully and to accomplish that, we require the bare minimum of what I've just posted.

See you in class, let's hope our next raid boss doesn't 'school' us.
