re: Add-Ons and You

0
As many of you are already aware, Peace through Violence requires that 2 World of Warcraft add-ons be installed for all raids, and strongly recommends a third add-on.

Before getting into the nitty-gritty concerning required add-ons, installation, and use, I thought I might explain briefly what an add-in is, and how it works.

Add-ons are fully sanctioned by Blizzard, provided that they do not fully automated a task within the game. Add-ons are usually created to extend the functionality of the user interface, or to provide some additional functionality that was not included in the game client.

To quote from WoW Wiki:

Quote:
From a user's point of view, what you need to know is that AddOns come in the form of one or more text files, ending in the ".toc", ".xml" and ".lua" extensions. These files are supposed to go into a folder called Interface in your World of Warcraft folder, or into one of its sub-folders. Usually AddOns are distributed as zip files by their authors, and you "install" them by simply unzipping them in your World of Warcraft\Interface folder.

Warning: Be very very careful with AddOns that come as executable ".exe" files. Always triple-check before you use these to make sure that they really do what they say they do, as executable files can do anything whatsoever to your computer. AddOns are supposed to be written in text format in .xml and .lua files, so that anyone can check that there is nothing malicious about them. You have no such check available with executable files. Also, since AddOns only operate within WoW, they can't harm your computer, whereas executable files can.

Having said that, some authors do distribute their AddOns as executable files. These executables most of the time don't do more than just unzip the AddOn's files and place them in your WoW folder in the appropriate places. Occasionally the executables are used to automatically download updated versions of the AddOn, or to upload data collected by the AddOn (for example item statistics to be put on a web-site, etc.).

Uninstalling: You can always uninstall any AddOn and reset the WoW UI to its clean default state by merely deleting or renaming the Interface, WTF, and Cache folders in your WoW folder, then restarting WoW.

To install an add-on, simply download the add-on from a known safe location, and then unzip the contents of the file into your \Program Files\World of Warcraft\Interface\Addons directory.

Peace through Violence uses 3 add-ons for raiding purposes:

Deadly Boss Mods:

Deadly Boss Mods (downloaded here: http://violentpeace.guildlaunch.com/guild/library/46800/DBM3.22.zip)

Deadly Boss mods is loaded by the WoW client when you enter a dungeon that is supported by the add-on. DBM gives all raid attendees additional information on boss special attacks, debuffs, and helps guide all raid attendees through boss fights. For example, DBM will warn users when Aran is preparing to launch his flame wreath attack, and provides a timer bar on the screen preparing you for when the attack will be launch, and then a duration bar for how long the attack will last.

The Deadly Boss Mods interface may be accessed via a special button that is installed on the mini-map when the add-on is installed.

Full details on this add-on can be found here:

Omen Threat Meter

Omen Threat Meter (downloaded here: http://violentpeace.guildlaunch.com/guild/library/46800/Omen79986.2.zip)

Omen Threat Meter provides the raid attendee with a gage to determine the threat he or she is currently generating in relation to the other raid attendees. Too much threat = agro = dead raid attendee.

The Omen Threat Meter interface may be accessed via a special button that is installed on the mini-map when the add-on is installed.

Recount:

Recount (downloaded here: http://violentpeace.guildlaunch.com/guild/library/46800/Recount81272.zip)

Recount records damage and healing for Graph Based Display. Most of the damage reports and healing reports you see posted during raids are generated by Recount.

Warning: Recount can use a decent amount of memory at default settings due to saving of DPS and other stats every second. These can be disabled if not used in the options under filter by unclicking checkmarks under the stopwatch. Memory usage though shouldn't effect your performance though.

The Recount interface may be accessed by typing the following into the chat window:

/recount show

Full details on this add-on can be found here:
